- Quotes broken into lines for area, depth, base, steel, finish and sealer
- Pour dates picked around mesa heat in summer and below-freezing nights in winter
Walkways That Stay Flat and Drain Right
Sidewalks and walkways are narrow slabs, and that makes them more sensitive to what happens underneath than a wide driveway. A single wet spot from a downspout or a dripping hose bib can drop one panel an inch, and suddenly there is a trip hazard at the front door. In Rio Rancho, many walkways were poured with homes from the 1980s through the 2000s, and typical problems at that age are lifted or sunken panels, cracked steps and side-yard paths that send water toward the foundation.
Common walkway jobs
- Front entry walks. A new route from the drive to the entry, often built wider than the builder's original so guests are not walking single file.
- Side-yard paths. A concrete path along the side of the house for trash bins, yard work and access to the backyard. Done right, it also keeps runoff moving away from the wall.
- Garden and backyard walks. Paths between the patio, gate, shed and garden beds, laid out to follow how you actually walk.
- Steps and landings. Replacing crumbling or uneven steps with consistent riser heights and a landing at the door.
- Trip-hazard panels. Cutting out and replacing individual panels that have settled or heaved.
Built for the conditions here
Most residential walks are poured 4 inches deep over packed gravel. HomeGuide notes that a 4-inch gravel base is typical for paths up to 4 feet wide. We slope every walk slightly to one side so it sheds water, cut control joints at regular spacing so cracks fall in straight lines, and finish with a light broom texture for grip. Winter frost and the occasional snowfall make traction and drainage important, and freeze-thaw flaking is much less likely on air-entrained concrete that is properly finished and sealed.
The walk at the street is different
A path inside your lot is your business. The strip of sidewalk along the curb, along with curbs and driveway approaches, usually belongs to the public right-of-way, which the city or county controls, and many places put upkeep of that strip on the adjoining owner. Rio Rancho straddles Sandoval and Bernalillo counties, so the answer depends on the lot. Before any work at the curb, we confirm who has jurisdiction at your address.
Repair or replace?
If a panel is cracked but still level, sealing the crack may be enough. If it has dropped, it can sometimes be lifted by leveling. If it is broken into pieces, heaved, or the base underneath has washed out, replacing that panel is the lasting fix. We look at each panel separately and price only what needs work.

Building a Walkway
1. Route and width
We stake the path, note where runoff travels, and settle the width and any step locations.
2. Break-out and gravel
Any old walk is demolished and hauled off, then gravel is packed down as the base.
3. Forms and placement
Forms go in with a gentle side-to-side tilt, and the concrete is placed and floated.
4. Texture and cure
Joints are tooled or sawn, the surface is broomed for grip, and curing begins immediately.

Sidewalks & Walkways Questions
What width works for a front walk?
Three feet is a common minimum. Four feet lets a pair walk next to each other and looks more in proportion with most entries. We size it to your front door and driveway.
Do I have to maintain the public sidewalk by my house?
That rule differs between jurisdictions, and many do put it on the property owner. We find out which rules cover your lot before touching anything in the public right-of-way.
Can you replace just one sidewalk panel?
Yes. The damaged panel is saw-cut at its joints and lifted out, the base underneath is repaired, and a fresh panel is poured. It will look lighter than the older concrete for a while, but the trip edge is gone.
Why do sidewalk panels sink?
Nearly always water: a downspout, a dripping spigot, sprinklers or storm runoff soften or wash out the soil underneath. A lasting fix deals with that water as well as the concrete.
