Repair That Starts With Why It Broke
Concrete repair in Rio Rancho usually comes down to one question: why did it fail? A crack that opened because concrete shrinks is a cosmetic issue. A slab that dropped because roof runoff has been soaking the ground under it for years will keep moving after a surface patch. Much of the city's concrete was poured with homes built from the 1980s through the 2000s, so every kind of damage shows up here, and the right fix depends on reading it correctly.
Reading the damage
- Hairline cracks. Common and usually harmless. They can be sealed to keep water out.
- Wider or growing cracks. Often a sign of movement underneath. HomeGuide's leveling guide treats cracks wider than a quarter inch as a sign replacement may be the better choice.
- Sunken sections. Water softened or washed out the ground beneath. Leveling or replacement works only if the water source is fixed too.
- Flaking and pitting (scaling). The top layer is breaking off, often from freeze-thaw cycles on concrete that was overworked, too wet, or never sealed.
- Broken edges. Tires running off the side of a thin driveway edge, or a slab with no support at its border.
Repair options
Crack sealing. Routing a crack clean and filling it with flexible sealant keeps water from getting underneath, which helps in a place where wet ground can settle.
Leveling. A sunken panel can sometimes be lifted by pumping material underneath it. HomeGuide lists mudjacking and polyurethane foam leveling, and says the results depend on the method and the soil. Leveling a slab without fixing the water that sank it invites it to sink again.
Resurfacing. A thin overlay renews a surface that is worn or scaled but still structurally sound and level.
Section replacement. Saw-cutting out a broken or sunken panel and pouring a new one with dowels into the neighbors. Often the most lasting repair for a single bad section.
Full replacement. When damage is widespread, the base has failed, or the slab is near the end of its life, starting over is usually better value.
Fixing the water
Most settled slabs have a water story behind them: a downspout that empties at the edge, a sprinkler that sprays the joint, or a low spot where summer storm water sits. The New Mexico Bureau of Geology lists roof runoff, irrigation and leaking water lines among the sources of water behind soil collapse in the state. Extending downspouts, regrading, and sealing joints are inexpensive steps that protect the repair.
What we will tell you
If a crack is cosmetic, we will say so and suggest sealing rather than replacement. If a crack runs into the house foundation or walls, that is beyond flatwork, and we will recommend a foundation or structural specialist. Our goal is a repair that lasts, at the lowest cost that gets you there.

Concrete Repair Questions
Should cracked concrete be fixed or replaced?
Thin cracks in a slab that is still level usually just need sealing. Wide cracks, dropped sections, broken pieces or flaking over large areas tend to mean replacing that section or the whole slab. We judge it on site and price both routes when both make sense.
How long does slab leveling hold?
HomeGuide's leveling guide says professionally leveled concrete lasts 5 to 10 years or more, with method and soil making the difference and good drainage helping it last longer. That is why a drainage fix is part of every leveling job we do.
Why is my concrete flaking?
That is scaling: the top layer breaking away, usually because water in the surface froze. Finishing that overworked the surface or added water makes it worse. A sound slab can be resurfaced, and sealing helps keep it from happening again.
Do you repair foundation cracks?
No. We work on flatwork such as driveways, patios, walks and slabs. If a crack runs into your house foundation or walls, we will recommend a foundation or structural specialist.
